Shiv Nadar – This year’s Hurun India Philanthropy List index has been topped by the founder of HCL Technologies, Shiv Nadar. He is one of India’s most prolific philanthropists, who donated ₹2,153 crore.

Recognized for his strong focus on education and social action, Nadar’s main giving focuses on the Shiv Nadar Foundation, which focuses intensively on fostering education and transforming leadership in India.

The Hurun India Philanthropy List which lists the most generous givers in the country as per their donations in the preceding calendar year had the industrial tycoon Nadar leapfrog over some of the major Indian brand names like Ratan Tata and Mukesh Ambani.

His donations suggest an increased interest in charity investment that aims at responding to the social needs of India where he deems the education sector as vital in responding to the needs of a growing economy of India as a nation.

But Nadar’s ascent to the philanthropy list signals a new development in which India’s technology leaders and entrepreneurs are displacing traditional tycoons as funders of the country’s charities.

This year’s list gives credence to what is now fast becoming the new age of social entrepreneurship whereby philanthropists such as Nadar use their wealth to foster change.
